Excursion - December Winter Cruise

Day 4 - Nassau Bahamas - $60

This is a private excursion exclusively for Mike One Travel guests.  The itinerary includes the following:

Fort Fincastle and Queen Staircase,

This Fort was constructed of cut limestone c. 1793 and strategically placed atop Bennet's Hill to protect historic Nassau town and its harbor; it was built under the governorship of John Murray, also called Viscount Fincastle, in the shape of a paddle-wheel steamer. The fort overlooked Nassau and Paradise Island and the eastern approaches to New Providence. It mounted two 24-pounders, two 32-pounders, two 12-pounder cannons and one howitzer and served as a lighthouse until September 1817 when it was replaced by the lighthouse on Paradise Island.

The Queen's Staircase is a walkway of 66 steps (102 feet (31 m) in Nassau, the capital city of The Bahamas. It was carved out of solid limestone rock by 600 slaves between 1793 and 1794 to create an escape route from the fort above and is a major landmark of Nassau. The stairs are located at Fort Fincastle Historic Complex near Bennet's Hill in Downtown Nassau next to Princess Margaret Hospital and Grosvenor Campus of the University of the Bahamas. The staircase has water cascading to a pool below, along the side over a series of steps. At the bottom, a walkway goes between high stone walls, tropical plants, and trees.

The Bahamas Cake Factory story begins in the heart of downtown Nassau, the Bahamas in the year 2000. George Bates, originally from the United Kingdom founded a recipe that would inspire his “Original” Rum Cake. Everyone loved his recipe so much that he decided to open a small Cakeshop, a store that has since then grown into the most favorite brand of Rum Cake in The Bahamas.  Today, the Bahamas Cake Factory still sits in the same location where it started out and has created a culture so irresistibly delicious that in 2014 it was recognized by the state as the Official Cake of The Bahamas. Loaded with our top-secret ingredients, baked to perfection, and gently marinated in our signature brand of Ole Nassau Bahamian Rum, our cakes have become not just a dessert, but also an important part of a new lifestyle for both Bahamians and tourists.

The Atlantis property was originally part of the Paradise Island Hotel and Casino, which opened in 1968. It was owned by Resorts International, a Merv Griffin company. Paradise Island was purchased by South African hotel magnate Sol Kerzner and Kerzner International Limited in 1994, and Kerzner's new resort, consisting of the Coral Towers and the previously built The Beach Tower, opened officially on December 11, 1998. The property's name was changed to Atlantis when The Royal Towers was built. The Coral Towers and The Beach Tower were later refurbished to match the theme of the Royal Towers. On March 28, 2007, a 600-suite luxury hotel named The Cove Atlantis opened on Paradise Island. Another tower, the 497-room The Reef, opened on December 19, 2007.[4
