The ancient city’s defining landmark since 1782, the palace became the centerpiece of a new Thai capital called Krung Thep (city of angels), known outside of Thailand as Bangkok. The focal point of the palace is the Emerald Buddha carved out of jade and adorned with gold. Continue to Wat Po – one of the oldest temples in Bangkok and home of the famous 45-meter reclining Buddha as well as the original school of traditional Thai massage. In the afternoon, we immerse ourselves in a world of exotic aromas and colors at the Flower Market of Pak Klong Talad. Experience a Tuk Tuk ride to Wat Trimit, home to the Golden Buddha. We also traverse China Town to explore one of the most dynamic and vibrant commercial districts of Bangkok. Later, we return to the hotel to freshen up and enjoy dinner.

Hop on a long-tail boat and weave our way through hundreds of other boat to explore the floating market of Damnoen Saduak. Being the most popular in Thailand, Damnoen Saduak is great for photographing, local food tasting, and recalling a bygone way of life. After Damnoen Saduak, we continue to Kanchanaburi to visit one of the War Cemeteries and the War Museum, the River Kwai Bridge, and the Death Railway which the Japanese hoped to stretch all the way to the Myanmar border. Enjoy a train ride on that infamous railway then return to Bangkok for dinner and overnight at hotel.

Day 5, November 29: Bangkok – Ayutthaya – Bangkok (B, L) This morning we drive 90 km to Ayutthaya, the legendary Kingdom of Siam's former capital. A thriving trade and political capital of Siam for over 400 years, Ayutthaya is filled with palaces, temples and religious monuments of great historical and cultural significance – even in their ruined state. It is fair to say that no study of Thai architecture or art is complete without a trip to this once glorious capital, which gave birth to the unique U-Thong style. Visually rich and architecturally astounding, it is an excursion that inspires anyone, especially photographers. Stroll around the splendid Bang Pa-In Summer Palace and its landscaped gardens, peppered with curious buildings that blend turn-of- century European architectural styles with Thai and Chinese styles. Proceed to inner Ayutthaya and explore the temple ruins in and around the Ayutthaya Historical Park, taking in Wat Mongkol Borpith, Wat Phra Srisanpetch and Wat Yai Chai Mongkol. Return to Bangkok by boat, enjoying a lavish lunch perfected by the scenery along the riverbanks. Back in Bangkok, we’ll have plenty of time to relax or further explore the city.

Day 6, November 30: Bangkok – Hua Hin (B, D) We bid farewell to Bangkok and drive to Hua Hin, approximately 200 km away, for a beach break. Upon arrival, settle into our hotel and relax.

Walk across the Sai River to the Burmese town of Taichilek for a glance of border life on Burmese side. Depart Mae Sai for Chiang Saen and take a boat along the mighty Mekong to the famous (or infamous) Golden Triangle on the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos. The Golden Triangle was once the centre of the opium trade in Southeast Asia. Later, visit the Hall of Opium for further knowledge about the opium trade that gripped northern Thailand just some decades ago. If time permits, call at a hill tribe village en our route back to Chiang Rai for dinner and overnight at hotel.

Day 8, December 2: Chiang Rai – Chiang Mai (B, D) Our tour today starts with an orientation drive followed by a visit to the Hill Tribe Museum. Next, we drive to Doi Tung at 2000 meters ASL, the Doi Tung Development Project base. Established in 1987, the project aims to recover the land destroyed by shifting cultivation, eradicate opium cultivation, and encourage farmers to practice sustainable agriculture. In Doi Tung, visit the villa of the mother of the previous king and her beautiful garden Mae Fah Luang. The garden is located on land that was originally the Akha village of Pa Kluay, a major route for opium and weapon trafficking in the old days. The decorative flowers are grown and nurtured by local villagers. Later, we visit a village of the ethnic Akha to learn about their traditions, values, and lifestyle. Afternoon, we depart Chiang Rai for Chiang Mai – the Rose of the North. En route, visit the unique temple of Wat Rong Khun to see some of Thailand's best-kept artistic achievements housed in an unconventional structure of Buddhist-inspired architecture. This evening we’ll enjoy the signature Khantoke dinner of Chiang Mai.

Day 9, December 3: Chiang Mai (B, D) After breakfast, we embark on a leisurely tour by tuk tuk. Drive through different parts of the city and visit many important and interesting temple grounds such as Warorot Market, Wat Phra Sing, Wat Chedi Luang, and especially the remarkable temple of Doi Su Thep. Located high on a mountain top, overlooking the city and lowlands, the air is cool and clear. On a sunny day, of which Chiang Mai has many, the brilliant gold plated Buddha images make stunning photographic subjects. We’ll have ample time to relax or roam the historic old town and participate in a wide array of activities – a night market lined with delicious street food stalls, a Muay Thai stadium, and a plethora of unique bars and restaurants. Our dinner will be served at a Thai restaurant.

Day 10, December 4: Chiang Mai (B, D) After breakfast we leave the city for the jungle where we’ll visit an Elephant Sanctuary. Meet and interact with Asian elephants in their natural habitat and learn about their behavioral pattern. After a briefing on the sanctuary, we will help the sanctuary keepers prepare natural foods for the elephants in their care. Then we will be introduced to the rescued elephants and instructed how to feed them properly. We also stand on a chance to have fun from a mud spa with the elephants and help them wash off afterwards in the elephant shower room! Early afternoon we return to the city and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. This evening we feast on another lavish Thai dinner.
